Do I need to send save the dates for my wedding? | Paper & Ink Studio
After the sheer joy and euphoria of saying yes to your soulmate’s all-important question – you’re finally engaged!
You’ve shared the good news with your family and your friends. Perhaps you’ve celebrated and partied it up with an epic engagement party (and nursed the hangover that likely came with it). Maybe you’ve already got an idea of ‘The dress, the suit, the venue and your bridal party, too. Woohoo!
With all the excitement and buzz that comes with planning a wedding, there’s stress and anxiety too, and one question playing on your mind (let’s face it, there’s probably about a million questions), might be: “Do I need to send out save the date cards for my wedding?”

Firstly, are there any reasons NOT to send them?
Absolutely! Here’s our top 2 reasons for you to consider NOT sending save the dates:
-
If your wedding is taking place within the next six months
Is your wedding taking place within the next six months? Well then, our lovely friend, you can skip the save the date search altogether and head straight to the main stationery event – the wedding invitations.
Why? As we recommend sending your wedding invitations 4 months before your big day, there’s no point sending a save the date just 2 months before. So, instead of saving that date, save some trees instead, along with your wedding budget and your sanity!
-
The guest list isn’t finalised
Umming and ahhh’ing over the relative who lives overseas, and you haven’t seen in years? You might see their updates on Facebook, but that’s about as far as that relationship goes.
Maybe you’re changing jobs and don’t think you’ll be in touch with your co-workers by the time your wedding day arrives?
Don’t send a save the date card to these people or any guest you may decide not to invite. In fact, it’s probably best to wait until your list is finalised completely. Do we really need to explain why? You’d probably prefer not to have that awkward conversation…
4 reasons to send save the date cards
So, when should you send a save the date? Take our hand and let’s jump into the date saving scenarios:
-
You’ve got some time on your side before you walk down that aisle
If you have at least 12 months until your wedding, you’ll need to send a save the date.
-
Your wedding isn’t local
With travel FINALLY on the cards after a couple years hiatus, destination weddings are back baby! You can finally dust off that suitcase, renew that passport and prepare for take-off.
If your wedding isn’t local, and you’re choosing a dreamy down south or up north beach side, interstate, or overseas, give your guests as much notice as possible – this allows them to book necessary travel and accommodation well in advance.
-
You genuinely want everyone invited to come
Chances are you want every single person invited to your wedding to actually be able to attend and see you get hitched, right? Then the notice period is everything.
For mums and dads to find a babysitter so they can really get their party shoes on, and guests to schedule time off work and so on.
-
To avoid date clashes with your fellow wedding buddies
You know what they say, the early bride or groom gets their chosen date! Or at least something along those lines…
Nobody wants to be double booked, especially two weddings on the same day! Bride Wars, anyone?
