Just engaged? Feeling overwhelmed after the “yes”? Read this.

Just Engaged? Here’s Where to Start with Your Wedding Planning

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!! You’ve just said yes, popped some bubbles, and now you’re staring at that ring on your finger wondering, What now?

It’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed in these early stages. With so much inspiration (and pressure) online, it can be hard to know where to start. We get it. We've been guiding couples through the wedding planning journey for over 30 years combined, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little structure, support, and solid planning, your wedding can be everything you’ve dreamed of... and more.

So take a deep breath. Grab a cuppa. And let’s help you get started the right way, with clarity, confidence and a little Paper & Ink magic.

1. Take time to celebrate before diving in
It’s easy to rush straight into Pinterest boards and guest lists, but the engagement season is special too. Don’t skip the chance to enjoy it. Go out for dinner. Share the news with loved ones. Bask in the glow before the planning begins and take all the photos!

2. Sit down and talk about your big picture
Before making any bookings or decisions, talk to each other about your priorities. What’s most important to you both? A huge party? A small gathering? A destination wedding? Aligning on your vision will guide everything else.

3. Set a realistic budget early
Yes, money talk isn’t exactly romantic but it is essential. Be honest about what you can afford, and research typical costs. Budgeting now avoids stress later (trust us).

4. Download our free planning checklist
We created this Free Wedding Planning Checklist to give you structure without the stress. It covers what to do, when to do it, and keeps everything in one place.

5. Choose a date range, not just a single day
Being flexible with your date opens up more venue and vendor options, especially if you're dreaming of a popular season or location.

6. Start with the venue and celebrant
These two book up quickly, and your venue choice can influence everything from styling to logistics. Once they’re locked in, you can work around them.

7. Don’t try to plan everything at once
There are so many elements to a wedding, trying to do it all in one weekend will only lead to burnout. Focus on one step at a time.

8. Keep it personal
The best weddings reflect the couple. Don’t feel pressured to follow traditions that don’t resonate with you. This is your day.

9. Lean on professionals
You don’t have to do it all alone. Whether it’s hiring a planner, a stylist, or using a resource like our Essential Wedding Planner Kit, having expert support makes all the difference.

10. Remember: nothing is perfect and that’s okay
There will be bumps in the road. But the goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a day that feels right for you both.

Real Wedding Wisdom: Advice from Couples Who’ve Been There

We asked some of our past couples what advice they’d give to those just starting out. Here’s what they said:

“Pick three things you really care about and let the rest go. For us, it was food, music, and photos. Everything else was a bonus.”
Claire & Jono

“Start early. I thought 18 months was plenty of time, but the good suppliers go fast!”
Simone & Darren

“Have a wet weather plan you’re actually happy with. It rained on our day and we were so glad we’d thought it through.”
Emma & Zoe

“Ask for help. Our on day planner saved us hours and kept us calm when things felt chaotic.”
Michael & Jess

Your Wedding, Your Way

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting (and sometimes emotional) times in life. It’s a celebration of your relationship and a reflection of who you are as a couple.

And while yes, it involves spreadsheets and suppliers and RSVP dramas, it also involves magic. So take it one step at a time. Use resources that support you. Ask for help when you need it. And most of all, enjoy the process. You only get to do this once.

We’re here for every step.
